India is embarking on a significant initiative to develop its own generative AI model, aiming to establish a strong presence in the global AI landscape. Announced by Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, the project is supported by the India AI Compute Facility, which has secured an impressive 18,693 GPUs—surpassing the initially planned 10,000.
The facility’s infrastructure includes 12,896 Nvidia H100 and 1,480 Nvidia H200 GPUs, with 10,000 units ready for immediate deployment. This robust computing power is designed to support researchers, startups, and institutions across the country, accelerating AI development and innovation.
The indigenous AI model aims to address India’s linguistic and cultural diversity, ensuring inclusivity and reducing biases in AI applications. The government has opened proposals for AI model development, with an expected completion timeline of four to eight months. Additionally, 18 AI-driven projects focusing on agriculture, climate change, and learning disabilities have been selected to leverage this infrastructure.
This initiative reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in AI technology, fostering self-reliance, and promoting ethical AI development tailored to its unique societal needs.
