In a groundbreaking move that could redefine internet access across rural and remote parts of India, Reliance Jio has officially launched its satellite-based broadband service, JioSpaceFiber. This service promises to bring high-speed internet to areas where traditional fiber connections are either too expensive or simply not possible due to geographical challenges.
The new JioSpaceFiber initiative is powered by a partnership with SES, a global satellite communications company. It uses advanced Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites to deliver low-latency and high-speed connectivity—comparable to fiber broadband—across even the most remote corners of India. This includes regions like Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam, which are the first locations to benefit from the service.
What makes JioSpaceFiber stand out is not just the technology but also the ambition behind it. Reliance aims to democratize digital access and make fast internet a reality for all Indians, not just those living in cities. Until now, many villages and distant areas have been left behind in the digital revolution due to lack of infrastructure. With satellite-based internet, these communities could soon access everything from online education to telemedicine and e-governance platforms.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, said that this technology will help India move closer to digital equality. He emphasized that JioSpaceFiber is not a replacement but a complement to existing fiber and mobile broadband services, ensuring that no one is left unconnected due to location.
With this launch, Reliance Jio has taken a major step in bridging the digital divide, setting an example that could be followed by other developing nations facing similar connectivity challenges. As the rollout expands, millions of Indians could experience high-speed internet for the first time—bringing new opportunities, services, and growth to areas that have long been neglected.
